Last week in Dina's class, Emma's mom came in as part of our Community Helpers unit. She works for a dog rescue organization and spoke a little about proper dog handling technique and about rescuing dogs. Eighth grade students in ELA this week took part in a debate. The topic was whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. During argumentation students are learning how to establish a claim, use evidence from text/media to support their claim, and then include their reasoning behind why they chose that evidence and how it ties to their claim. Students had to research the topic prior and in the process learned about using accurate sources and comparing/contrasting information. ...
