Educational Philosophy

The mission of Unity Charter School is not only what we teach – the principles and practices of sustainability – it is also the way we teach. Our approach to instruction is based on empowering students and families to actively influence and engage in decision-making relating to the educational program, and individualizing attention to student interests and needs. A Personal Learning Plan is designed for each student to utilize their interests and areas of strength to reinforce areas that might require more reinforcement.

Knowledge does not fall neatly into separate categories or disciplines. While specialization can be useful, the world can best be viewed as a whole with the various branches of knowledge supporting each other. Whenever possible, teaching and learning are experienced within a context of sustainability and the relevance of this knowledge to the students’ lives. When appropriate, subjects being taught are integrated within multiple or cross-curricular disciplines.
