Lottery Process

The Lottery has four tiers for each grade, Kindergarten through grade eight.

Tier ONE for each grade includes students residing in the Morris School District with a sibling attending Unity.

Tier TWO for each grade includes students residing out of Morris School District with a sibling attending Unity.

Tier THREE for each grade includes students residing in the Morris School District without a sibling attending Unity.

Tier FOUR for each grade level includes students residing out of the Morris School District without a sibling attending Unity.

A Waiting List is created for each grade based on the four tiers and the random drawing and announcing of the names at the Lottery. Each student is then assigned a number on the Waiting List for each grade.

Once a student begins to attend Unity Charter School, they do not have to reapply to the Lottery each year.

Unity accepts all applications and does not discriminate based on sex, race, color, religion, handicaps or disabilities.

In summary, the night of the lottery, all applicants are assigned a number, per the order they are picked “out of the hat”.  Based on the available positions, students at the top of the list in their respective grade will be accepted.  The remaining students not accepted will be moved up the waitlist accordingly.  If there are two siblings on the waitlist, and one is accepted and the other is not, the sibling who did not get in will be moved to the top of the waitlist.

You will be notified by February 27th whether or not you have been accepted.  If you are not accepted, we will advise your waitlist status and instructions for checking your status online.  Students who are accepted will receive the enrollment package.

Here are some examples to clarify:

Scenario 1:

We have one fifth grade position available, and 14 students on the waitlist.  The first student on the waitlist is offered the position and accepts.  The remaining waitlist applicants move up accordingly.  The family cannot make the commute to the school, and decline the offer in July.  The next student on the waitlist is offered the position and accepts.  The remaining waitlist applicants move up accordingly.

Scenario 2:

We have one first grade position available, and 30 students on the waitlist.  The first student on the waitlist is offered the position and accepts.  The remaining first grade applicants move up accordingly.  However, this student has a fourth grade sibling who is #18 on the waitlist and is out of district.  #1 & #2 on the fourth grade waitlist also have siblings who have accepted, and they are both in district.  Therefore, the out of district fourth grader with a sibling moves to #3 on the waitlist.
